1. I think we've acomplished our first goal, which was to establish a community of math educators from local high schools and colleges to come together to share information and initiatives, promote alignment and common standards, and create a positive environment for dialogue and mutual education. 2. The next goal is find the necessary support to sustain our current efforts on some level. 3. We hope to create a firm alignment with the Riverpoint Partnership and ESD 101 on a collaborative effort. The will and model are there, but time is our current adversary. 4. Real success will come with measurable increases in student success. I think we've been part of the motivation and support for local alignment efforts recently, and hopefully those efforts will bear fruit.

Which local TMP project(s) would you like to connect with and learn more about to discuss sharing resources, expertise and forming possible collaborations as we head to the close of TMP Phase II?

At the moment I think those projects and efforts that engaged in student and community outreach efforts and those who worked toward creating sustained communities; e.g. creating departments and/or PLCs that consistly address not only administrative issues, but those of content and pedagogy as well.

Where are you seeing movement towards some level of sustainability for select aspects of, or perhaps all of,, your TMP-funded initiative? In other words, where do you see your work taking root, extending out, influencing others, and perhaps being adopted by others? An example or two would be helpful.

I do think we are creating an opportunity for sustainability. We're maintaining a close connection with the work of the Riverpoint Partnership for Math and Science (RPMS), and hope to form a collaborative effort with them and the local ESD in the next year. Our symposium this year focused on sharing out information on state and local initiatives in math education, collaboratively sharing and creating strategies promoting the student attributes, promoting our high school OutReach program and giving The RiverPoint Partnership an opportunity to share and promote that work. The community-building forum of the symposium was very well received by the participants. Currently we're discussing collaborative efforts with RPMS and the local ESD to use the community and the forum to create Professional Learning Communities within departments and districts that will also include people from post-secondary schools. I also believe the connections established between schools and the positive, informed dialogue being promoted has begun to influence curriculum decisions at the K-12 and post-secondary level.

We have lined up Harvard's Kay Merseth to present a TMP webinar on case development later this month (look for an email on this). And we're working with Jo Boaler and Ruth Parker now to identify webinar dates targeting later fall on the topic of parent / student communication and outreach.
With this in mind, who else would you like to hear from? What PD might TMP help arrange for local project teams as a possible follow up to the August Institute or as a way of better connecting and learning from work of the various TMP local projects?

In addition to Kay Merseth, we've now added a Jo Boaler/Ruth Parker webinar as well.
Here are all of the TMP fall events so far:
I. Jo Boaler, University of Sussex Professor, and Ruth Parker, CEO of the Mathematics Education Collaborative (MEC), will jointly present an Elluminate Webinar on 11/12/08 from 8:00AM – 10AM, o The focus of their session will be on communication and community engagement and will draw from Jo’s new book, What's Math Got to Do With It?: Helping Children Learn to Love Their Most Hated Subject--and Why It's Important for America, and from Ruth’s broad and deep experience helping educators, parents and the public work in partnership to improve mathematics teaching and student learning.
II. Kay Merseth, Director, Teacher Education Program, Harvard University, will facilitate two events for TMP this November:
On November 25, 2008 Kay will lead an Elluminate webinar from 2:30PM – 4:30PM Pacific on effective, engaging professional development using case development (a more detailed description forthcoming).
Kay will also be with us at the Rainbow Lodge on November 6-7, 2008 to work with local TMP project teams interested in her model approach to examining classroom practice and assessing student thinking. For more on the Rainbow Lodge event, and to register, visit http://www.transitionmathproject.org/pro-development/fall-convening08/08fall-convening.asp.
